Deserae Katz was a Italian women born in 11th century-Sicily. Deserae is the third Carina Doppelgänger, making her a descendant of Anise Carina.
Deserae fought alongside Darius Salvatore on the battlefield of the First Crusade, where she resided in his battalion of twelve. She disguised herself as a man, although Darius knew of her being a women, keeping her secret. Friends before they fought for the church in the First Crusade, Deserae and Darius were quite close, and he was her best friend.
Alexandria Salvatore sees Deserae as a distraction for Darius, so she kills her. After witnessing the pain she inflicted upon her child, she revives her using dark magic, and the two travel together for a time.
Eventually, to punish her brother for his actions towards her, Skylar Salvatore stakes Deserae in the heart, killing her. He mourns Deserae for weeks, even attempting to have his witches revive her, although he fails as she had already moved on.
